How Sponsorship Helps

Your sponsorship helps provide children with the necessities for a healthy and successful start to their life – nutrition, early childhood and adolescent development, education and school health.

Your generosity also lifts entire communities. Our programs reach children’s parents, caregivers and community members. Together we help save children’s lives, protect them from exploitation and provide them with hope for the future.

How Sponsorship Works

Save the Children has country offices and local staff in all of our sponsorship areas. Each child is identified and offered the opportunity to participate in our sponsorship programs in consultation with their family or caregiver. When you sponsor a child they are notified by our local staff.

Your donations for your child are combined with the gifts of other sponsors and donors – rather than just being giving directly to your sponsored child – to support programs that help make life better for all eligible children and their families in the communities we serve.

You have the opportunity to write letters and emails to your sponsored child and to receive correspondence from them. You will also receive our quarterly newsletters and get updates from our staff who work with your sponsored child.

You will be able to personally experience the positive change you are making in the life of a young child and their community.

My Sponsored Child

You are encouraged – but not obliged – to build a friendship with your sponsored child. They are eager and excited to hear from you and about your life, and happy to share about theirs.

Letters and drawings from your child will allow you to learn more about daily life in their own words and experiences. The letters are in your child's own hand (a parent or sibling may help them if they are too young to write). A translation is provided by our field staff, if necessary.

Their carefully drawn pictures and treasured words will enable you to share in the daily joys and struggles of your child's life as they grow and prosper.

FAQs

Will I sponsor an actual child? Yes. You have the opportunity to choose and sponsor a specific child (by region, country, gender and/or age) and to communicate with them if you choose. This allows you to connect with your sponsored child and to establish a friendship that will carry a special meaning for you both.

How much is sponsorship? Sponsorship starts at $28 a month – less than a dollar a day. You will help change the lives of children in need around the world. If you can sponsor for $30 or more, or sponsor multiple children you can help us achieve even more. We have many child sponsors who have sponsored for over 15 years.

How will my sponsorship donation be used? We strive to create lasting change for your sponsored child and their community through programs that focus on early childhood development, health and nutrition, as well as primary education.

Our experience has taught us that the most effective way to help children is by combining your sponsorship with those of other sponsors and donors - rather than just giving it directly to your sponsored child. This ensures that children in sponsorship communities, who may never have the opportunity to have a sponsor of their own, will still benefit from yoursupport and our programs.

Child Safety Policy

Save the Children is completely committed to conducting our programs in a manner that is both safe for the children we serve and to help protect the children with whom we and our sponsors are in contact with. As a humanitarian agency, we believe that all children have the right to live free of fear or impact of any form of abuse or exploitation. We are obliged to create and maintain an environment that aims to prevent these circumstances and promotes the implementation of our child safety policy. We are confident that our sponsors will join us in upholding this policy so that, together, we can do our best to ensure that the children we help remain safe. While the vast majority of individuals have good intentions, we must safeguard against the few who do not. We are sure you understand the need to protect the wellbeing of the children we support.

Correspondence (For One-to-One Child Sponsors Only)

In our efforts to keep children safe, we monitor the letters and packages sent to sponsored children. To protect the privacy of all parties, we do not allow children and sponsors to exchange contact information and require that all correspondence be sent through our field offices. Please note that correspondence is only available to individual (one-to-one) child sponsors.

Visits

While visits to our field offices are encouraged, in keeping with our commitment to child safety, all visits to sponsorship areas must be coordinated with Donor Services representatives at our headquarters at least 60 days in advance. Unannounced visits are not acceptable. Please note that the option to “meet” a sponsored child is only available to individual (one-to-one) child sponsors. Prior to visiting programs, a community or a sponsored child, an application form, release form and a background check will be required. We hope you understand that these steps are necessary to ensure the safety of children and their families and they will not discourage you from visiting our programs. Visits can be truly rewarding and life-changing experiences. To coordinate your visit please contact Donor Services or 1.800.728.3843 to learn more.

For the protection of the children we take any breach of these policies very seriously and, in the unfortunate circumstance that one should occur, we will end the sponsorship relationship immediately and take any necessary legal action if required.

Thank you for joining us in our efforts to keep the children we support safe by respecting our child safety policy.
